Formed in 2002, The Adventist Vocal Ensemble is a broadcast session choir, with an impressive television and radio output over its existence, with over two hundred and fifty different songs performed on television either on its own or in collaboration with other choirs and musical celebrities including Alexander Burke, Andrea Boccelli, Ruthie Henshall, Beverley Knight, Aled Jones, Ruby Turner, Sir Willard White, Mica Paris,Mike Doyle, Antonia Adelita Francis and Paul Carrack, to name but a few.
They have performed before Her Majesty The Queen, prime ministers and other luminaries.
With its emphases on vocal quality, versatility and discipline, it has won many hearts over the years by the warmth and beauty of its sound, its diversity, and its ability to interpret songs with great meaning. One BBC TV producer recently described the effect of the choir's sound as 'like relaxing in a warm bath'.
Stylistically, it sings sacred music in a variety of genres, mostly arrangements hymns (it regularly appears on the UK's most watched music programme :Songs Of Praise); gospel; a cappella and accompanied Spirituals; Classical; easy listening; and close-harmony. The individual singers who have performed over the years have voices which range from the pure to the rich, from the smooth to the edgy, with top sopranos required to hit top Cs whilst the basses have been required to hit the bottom Bbs (3 below middle C). But when it all comes together the results are truly amazing.
Its singers, drawn mostly (though not exclusively) from current and former singers of the Croydon SDA Gospel Choir and London Adventist Chorale, have an unending wealth of musical experience. The ensemble itself has performed to a number of audiences across Europe/
In spite of all the impressive lists of artists, venues and achievements - the real driving force, raison d'etre, the point of focus, the heart of the matter - is the faith so central to the lives of all the singers. Their song is their life story, written on every line, expressed in every note. Singing is their act of worship and adoration to God, as well as being an opportunity to bring a message of eternal life, joy and hope to others, whilst also being a means of self-expression.
Many in the broadcasting industry have cited the group's real sense of focus, purpose, its tremendous rapport with others and within itself, its professionalism and unassuming nature, as being reasons why they always look forward to working with the ensemble.
Even though it is a session choir, the demand for recorded material was so great by the televison viewing public, it decided to launch its own record label, AVE International Ltd, and record an album of songs most popular with the TV audiences. One of the songs on the CD, namely "Mary, Did You Know?" was selected for a compilation double album for Warner Music.
